Chicago Officer Killed in Hospital Shooting

Officer Samuel Jimenez, 28, was shot in the lobby of the hospital by a man who shot a woman in an apparently domestic-related dispute and a pharmaceutical assistant, police officials said at a Monday evening news conference.

Chicago Police Department Chief Communications Officer Anthony Guglielmi confirmed in a Tweet that Officer Samuel Jimenez has died from wounds sustained while responding to an active shooter incident at Mercy Hospital on the city's South Side on Monday.

Police engaged the suspect in the firefight, and the suspect was fatally shot. It has not been determined if he killed himself or was killed by police fire.

A second officer was also shot at, but the bullet struck his holster and embedded itself in his gun. The officer was not injured, according to ABC News.

Jimenez was assigned to the Wentworth District, where he was working Monday afternoon when he responded to calls of shots fired at Mercy Hospital and officers in need of assistance, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Officer Jimenez had just completed his probationary period with the department.
