A deputy with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office was badly wounded when an offender got out of his car at a traffic stop and opened fire.
According to the El Paso Times, Deputy Peter Herrera was shot several times during the incident.
Herrera had pulled over 27-year-old Facundo Chavez for a traffic violation. Chavez shot Herrera and then fled on foot but was apprehended by responding officers soon thereafter.
Herrera remains in critical condition and has had several surgeries.
