According to the Hillsboro Tribune, Trooper Nic Cederberg—a United States Army veteran—was shot 12 times nearly three years ago during a gun battle with a man accused of murdering his 24-year-old estranged wife.
Cederberg had responded to a call for a search for the suspected gunman who fled the scene in a white Mitsubishi. Cederberg located the suspect vehicle, and the suspect—James Tylka—rammed his patrol vehicle before opening fire.
Tylka died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound as other responding officers arrived to the scene.
