An officer with the Baltimore Police Department was shot and wounded during an exchange of gunfire with a suspect police had been searching for since he reportedly opened fire on an officer at a traffic stop on Monday night.
According to CBS News, Baltimore City Police Department Commissioner Michael Harrison said that the officer was shot in the lower leg when police located the suspect and he opened fire again. The assailant was struck and killed in the exchange of gunfire.
The officer was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
On Thursday morning the Baltimore City Fraternal Order of Police said on Twitter, "Our officer, who was shot last night, has been released from Shock Trauma and will recover. He is a hero along with all the officers involved in last night's incident. Their bravery was unwavering. More needs to be said about the current condition of our city, but, for now, just be proud of our BPD heroes."
The Tweet ended with #CityinCrisis, which has been a common theme from the FOP's recent Tweets which have been critical of the mayor and city hall.
Following the Monday night incident, the FOP said on Twitter, "The brave men and women of the Baltimore Police Department were told to stand down during the riots. Now we are being told to stand down on an attempted murder of a police officer."
The mayor responded to the Tweet at a news conference in city hall, saying, "We're all upset with crime being out of control in the city. We need all our partners, including the FOP, to sit down and figure out how we can work together instead of everybody putting out all these little quotes. ... We don't need people tweeting and being a distraction."
