Texas Deputy Killed When Passing Car Leaves Roadway, Striking Him

A deputy with the Falls County (TX) Sheriff's Department was struck and killed as he assisted a motorist stopped beside a freeway in the central area of the state on Friday afternoon.

A deputy with the Falls County (TX) Sheriff's Department was struck and killed as he assisted a motorist stopped beside a freeway in the central area of the state on Friday afternoon.

According to KWTX-TV, a passing vehicle hydroplaned and left the roadway, fatally striking Matt Jones. The impact also left Riesel Police Chief Danny Krumnow badly wounded with a lacerated spleen and numerous broken bones. K-9 Thor, who was also present at the scene, was not injured.

Jones was pronounced dead at the scene. Krumnow was transported to a nearby hospital where he is listed in stable condition.

Falls County Sheriff Ricky Scaman said in a statement, "Tragedy came to our county today and has taken the life of one of our brothers, K-9 Deputy Matt Jones. Mere words cannot express the loss we feel in our hearts. We have lost a brother, a friend, a husband, and a servant of our community. And with that, we mourn. In addition, we send our thoughts and prayers to Chief Krumnow as he begins his healing process."
