The daughter of a McAllen, TX, police officer who was killed Saturday when he was ambushed was attacked on Twitter for mourning her father with the hashtag "Blue Lives Matter."
Police say Officer Edelmiro Garza Jr. and Officer Ismael Chavez were shot by a suspect as they approached the door of a home. The suspect reportedly fired through the door. The gunman reportedly then shot and killed himself.
Savannah Chavez, the 16-year-old daughter of slain Officer Ismael Chavez, 39, tweeted in a since-deleted post Saturday, “Words cannot describe the pain I’m in, but I’m glad my dad is at peace,” Heavy.com said.
"You were an amazing man and anyone who ever came across you knew that,” the daughter added.
“I’m going to miss you so much. you died doing what you loved most, you died a hero. i love you daddy, see you soon. #bluelivesmatter 💙.”
Savannah received some supportive tweets in response.
But the anti-police crowd attacked.
“Being a cop is a choice. Lmao and last time I checked, blue people don’t exist. Maybe educate yourself?” was one of the milder negative responses.
Some were obscene and celebrated her father's death.
Savannah’s cousin wrote on Twitter, “For literally ANYONE that is giving MY cousin sh*t for grieving her FATHER, can literally go to f*cking hell. this man was the most loving and caring person anyone could ever meet! it’s pathetic how people can be so unsympathetic to a girl that is trying to commemorate her father.” Another person chimed in, “she’s never said it in response to Black Lives Matter. She said to honor one man. Her Dad. Show some f*cking compassion.” Another user also defended the daughter, writing, “What is wrong with people… Sorry for your loss sweetheart. Thank you for your dad’s service, May he Rest In Peace.”
An officers association has also asked Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton to review the hateful comments posted in reaction to Savannah's grief.
