An officer with the Detroit Police Department who was wounded by an assailant armed with several edged weapons opened fire on the attacker, fatally shooting him.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the man chased officers while armed with a 32-inch long sword and a dagger.

Chief James Craig told reporters at a press conference at the scene of the shooting Thursday evening on Detroit's west side that officers gave several commands to the man to drop the weapons.

One officer then deployed a TASER, which did not take effect on the assailant because he was wearing some form of protective equipment. Chief Craig described it as something akin to what hockey players might wear during a game.

The assailant then reportedly threw a dagger at an officer, striking him below the right eye, causing a laceration.

As the incident continued to unfold and the man continued to advance upon them with the sword, at least one officer opened fire, striking the assailant, police say.

The man was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The wounded officer was also transported to a nearby hospital where he was treated and released.
