Police officers with the Battle Creek (MI) Police Department were forced to shoot a passenger of a vehicle at a traffic stop who displayed at least one firearm in a threatening manner, authorities say.

According to WWMT-TV, police say an officer stopped a vehicle for multiple traffic violations shortly after midnight. The initial responding officer was engaged in conversation with the driver at the driver's side window when a second officer approached the passenger side.

The second officer said they saw a gun in the passenger’s waistband, commanded the passenger to put their hands up, and stated they would remove the passenger’s gun for safety.

According to police department reports, the passenger initially followed the second officer’s commands, but as the second officer reached for the gun in the passenger’s waistband, the passenger began to resist and reached for a second gun on the floor.

The wounded suspect was transported to a nearby hospital where he is expected to survive his injuries.

According to reports, no officers were harmed during the incident. Michigan State Police will conduct an investigation while two officers with the Battle Creek Police Department have been placed on paid administrative leave.
