Minneapolis Council Approves Funding to Temporarily Pay for Officers from Surrounding Agencies
Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo says violent crime is up more than 20 percent citywide compared with this time last year, and up 40 percent compared with two years ago. There have been 70 murders in the city this year, there were 39 in 2019.
Friday, the Minneapolis City Council narrowly approved a plan to add additional law enforcement personnel to help the Minneapolis Police Department for the remainder of 2020.
In a 7-6 vote, the council supported having the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office and Metro Transit provide additional law enforcement officers to work under the direction and command of MPD.
The agreement will cost the city $496,800 from Nov. 15 through Dec. 31, KTSP reports.

Morale on the Minneapolis PD is extremely low as the city council seeks to reimagine the force in the wake of the George Floyd incident and the rioting that followed. It has lost 130 officers to retirement or resignation since the rioting and the calls for abolishing the department. Chief Arradondo says the department is "bleeding" resources.
