A Chicago police officer shot in the city's West Englewood neighborhood Wednesday afternoon remains hospitalized Thursday morning, and the suspects remain at large.
A man with an arrest record for gun crimes is suspected in the shooting. The 28-year-old man is identified in a police alert as the gunman who opened fire on a marked Chicago police car.
CPD Supt. David Brown said about 5:42 p.m. two officers - who were in-uniform and driving a marked squad car - attempted a traffic stop. Her partner then jumped into the driver's seat and rushed her to University of Chicago Hospital, Brown said.
The officer was shot in the shoulder. Bullet fragments also hit her head. She was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition but is currently alert and stable, police told NBC 5 late Wednesday.
