Two officers serving a warrant in Newark, NJ, were shot Tuesday afternoon.
One officer was struck in the neck and the other in the leg, reports NBC New York. They were hit by gunfire from an elevated position, possibly a window or a roof, according to officials. At least two shots were fired from the suspect’s weapon, which is reported to have been a long arm.
The officers were taken to University Hospital, reports 6ABC. Their conditions are not yet known.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the injured officers and all the officers handling the Newark attack. This level of violence must be stopped and condemned by everyone," says Patrick Colligan, president of The New Jersey State Policeman’s Benevolent Association.
The neighborhood around the shooting location was locked down and the shooter was believed to be in a building within that area. Law enforcement officers were reported to have him surrounded late Tuesday afternoon.
