The Cape Coral Police Department released body-worn camera (BWC) video of when one of its officers jumped into a canal around 3 a.m. Tuesday and pulled a woman from a car while it was sinking.

“Without hesitation, Officer Kwesi Johnson jumped into the canal, busted out the driver's side window, and rescued the female from the sinking vehicle,” a police department social media post states. “Officer Johnson is a true hero in blue.”

Surveillance footage showed the woman driving through a cul de sac before driving off the asphalt and hitting a culvert, reports NBC6. She stopped for a moment before continuing to drive down the embankment and into the canal.

The BWC video starts while Johnson is in his car responding to the call. Upon arrival he sprints to the water, asks another officer for a baton, then quickly jumps in the water. He repeatedly struck the driver’s side window until it smashed, then pulled the woman out as water rushed in.

The woman was taken to an area hospital, where her condition was not released.

Police have not said if she will receive a citation for the crash or what caused it.
