A man suspected of attempting to steal a catalytic converter from an SUV in the parking lot of a Palmdale, CA, shopping center was killed when he was run over by the vehicle, authorities said Wednesday.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies responded at approximately 5:56 p.m. Tuesday to the parking lot and found the suspect lying in a parking space suffering from blunt trauma wounds, Lt. Hugo Reynaga told City News Service.

During their investigation deputies learned the victim, who was asleep in the Ford Excursion, heard a sawing noise underneath her vehicle, started the SUV and put it in reverse before realizing that she had run over the suspect and stopped.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the hospital.
