A man wanted on drug charges is accused of shooting a Woodruff, SC, police officer while the officer was serving an arrest warrant, Woodruff Police Chief Alan Bledsoe said.
The shooting happened at a home along the 500 block of Harrison Street just after 6 a.m. Monday, reports WHNS.
Bledsoe said Sgt. Darrell Dawkins made entry into the house to serve arrest warrants on Dennis Ray Alexander and Michael Goggins, who were both wanted on distribution of crack cocaine.
Dawkins identified himself and was then shot in the arm.
The injured officer could hear a young child crying out from a back bedroom and did not return fire for fear of harming the child, Bledsoe said.
The accused gunman, Alexander, put down the weapon and surrendered. Both Alexander and Goggins were arrested at the scene.
Bledsoe said the bullet passed through Dawkins' arm clean without hitting anything major. The sergeant, a 24-plus year veteran, was treated at the hospital and released.
"He's doing just fine and chomping at the bit to return to work," Bledsoe said at a news conference.
The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office has charged Alexander, 38, of Woodruff with attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

Two officers were shot in Gainesville, Florida, by a man who police say was leaving an area where he had killed a man inside a business. The suspect exited his vehicle in what the chief termed an “ambush-style” attack.
