The Houston Police Department has released video of a May 25 (2025) in which an officer was pinned in a suspect’s vehicle and shot and critically wounded the suspect.
Around 5:20 p.m. HPD officers who were working off duty at a local business spotted a Nissan Versa associated with “jugging,” a type of predatory theft, at the location, police said in a press release.
An HPD sergeant and two officers officers attempted to stop the vehicle. Police say the suspect drove the vehicle into oncoming traffic. The three officers attempted to remove the suspect from the vehicle.
The video shows the suspect’s vehicle striking another vehicle. HPD says the collision “caused the sergeant to become pinned inside the driver’s door of the suspect’s vehicle.” The suspect’s vehicle then hit a second vehicle, and the sergeant opened fire, wounding the suspect, police say.
Body camera video shows the suspect vehicle continued across the road and came to a stop.
Officer are shown on the video providing first aid to the wounded suspect.
He was transferred to a local hospital in critical condition.
HPD says the sergeant had non-life-threatening injuries and was treated and released.
The suspect has been identified by law enforcement as Maxie Ray Whitaker, 42. He is charged with aggravated assault of a peace office.
The case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the HPD Internal Affairs Division, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
