The violence of this week hits close to home for Dallas Police Chief David Brown.
Brown, 55, the head of a department that lost five officers on Thursday to anti-police sniper Micah Johnson, lost a son when he was involved in a shootout with officers in 2010, the New York Daily News reports.
The police chief addressed the country on Friday, the morning after Johnson went on a cop killing spree at an otherwise peaceful anti-police brutality rally organized in reaction to the fatal police shootings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, LA, and Philando Castile in Falcon Heights, MN.
Brown felt that heartbreak before when, on Father’s Day in 2010, his bipolar son fatally shot a civilian and a police officer from the nearby Lancaster Police department, and then was killed by officers who responded to the scene, CNN reported. Brown had been sworn in as the Dallas police chief just weeks before.
Brown’s son, who was also named David and was 27-years-old at the time, struggled with mental health issues and was high on PCP at the time of the June 20, 2010 shootings.
