Nearly nine hours after a shooting that killed one Charleston County, S.C., deputy and seriously wounded another, an ensuing standoff ended, reports WCIV.
Assistant Sheriff Mitch Lucas confirmed the overnight standoff had ended around 3:45 a.m. At a press conference Tuesday, Lucas identified the wounded deputy as 43-year-old Michael Ackerman, a member of law enforcement since 2004. He is expected to recover, officials said. The slain deputy was identified by Lucas as Joseph Matuskovic, 43, also a former Charleston police officer.
Coroner Rae Wooten said the shot that killed Matuskovic was fired at 8:37 p.m. The man barricaded himself in an apartment and fired shots through the door, striking the two on-duty deputies.
Wooten also identified the suspect in Monday night's shooting as 38-year-old Michael Oswald. Wooten said her office was still investigating the deaths and would not say whether Oswald killed himself or if a deputy hit and killed him in the exchange.
For nine hours after the shooting at the Gardens on Ashley River apartment complex, the suspect had barricaded himself in an apartment and negotiators had little to no luck getting him to talk to them.
According to Charleston County deputies, the shooting stemmed from a drunken man who was banging on doors at the Gardens at Ashley River apartment complex on Carriage Lane.
