New York City-based St. John’s University will provide up to $10 million in scholarship grants and other assistance to support the New York City Police Department’s efforts to create the most sophisticated and effective law enforcement agency in the nation.

Commencing September 2007, St. John’s will introduce the “NYPD Cadet Corps at St. John’s University” program. The program will recruit and enroll as many as 100 well-qualified transfer students who seek a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, providing them with up to $10,000 in annual scholarship funding that would be matched by $10,000 in tuition reimbursement offered by New York City. In addition, the University will provide $2,500 grants to incoming freshmen majoring in criminal justice to attract the very best and brightest students interested in law enforcement careers.

“The extraordinary work of the NYPD during and after the 9/11 tragedy brought to light its magnificent contribution to the citizens of this great city. Now, more than ever, it is incumbent upon all of us to ensure that these brave women and men, who risk their lives daily to ensure our safety and security, are provided the best training, equipment, and preparation available in law enforcement,” says St. John’s University Executive Vice President James P. Pellow.

To qualify, transfer students must meet admission standards, have completed a minimum of 45 credits, and be enrolled in the NYPD Cadet Corps program. Cadets can earn additional funds through part-time employment with the NYPD and will not be required to repay the city’s tuition reimbursement if they remain on the force for a minimum of two years.
