Officers Ryan Adams and Derek Underkoffler were also shot and critically wounded. They are both 32 years old and each has seven years of service on the force.
In a Friday press conference, Lebanon County District Attorney Pier Hess Graf released the names of the three officers and provided details of the shooting. She identified the shooter as Travis Shaud, 34, of Lebanon.
The district attorney said the police officers encountered immediate gunfire when they entered the residence and returned fire, killing Shaud. One of the injured officers was able to radio for help. Officers from surrounding police departments responded and they carried the wounded to safety and attempted life-saving measures on Lebo.
One witness told WGAL there were about eight to 10 shots fired. A search of the residence uncovered multiple firearms, according to the DA, who said Shaud shot at the officers with a handgun. She said he suffered from a long history of mental illness and mental issues.
“Again, at this time we continue to be focused on the tragic loss of Lieutenant Lebo and the recovery of Officers Adams and Underkoffler and also the well-being of all of our other members of the police department. We extend our thanks for the assistance of our countywide brothers in blue for their mutual aid response and we also thank the community for their outpouring of support,” said Lebanon Mayor Sherry Capello during the press conference.
