The Edmond, OK, motorcycle officer who was reported to be in critical condition in September after he was struck by a fleeing suspect, returned home from a rehab facility Tuesday escorted by numerous officers and other supporters.
“We’re happy to share that today Sgt. (Joseph) Wells left the rehab center and has officially been sent home! He still has a long journey ahead on his way to recovery, but this is certainly a major, and significant milestone worth celebrating,” the Edmond Police department states in a social media post.

Wells, a 16-year veteran of the Edmond Police Department, was injured as a result of the pursuit of a suspected drunk driver who had caused multiple wrecks in the city limits of Edmond.
The suspect drove toward Wells as he was stationary in the roadway and the officer fired one round at the suspect’s vehicle, but the suspect was not struck. The suspect’s vehicle struck both Wells and his motorcycle, police say.
Wells had been released from the hospital intensive care unit and moved to a regular hospital room in October. On Nov. 11, he was transported from the hospital to the rehab facility, where he continued treatment until he was discharged this week.
“Your love, prayers, encouraging words, and support have truly made an impact on Joe and the entire Edmond PD family. We will never lose sight of how incredibly blessed we are to serve such an amazing community,” the department says in another post.
Before his release from the rehab facility, Sgt. Joseph Wells was visited by firefighters from the Edmond Fire Department station that responded to the call when he was struck by a vehicle.
