According to a police statement, an officer saw a red pickup truck coming in the opposite direction, and as the two cars met, the driver of the pickup - without provocation - opened fire on the Millis officer.
In an attempt to avoid gunfire and seek cover, the officer drove the cruiser off the road and struck a tree, police told the
Metro West Daily News
. The police cruiser was immediately engulfed in fire.
The officer, who fired three shots in return, was not injured, though he was taken to Norwood Hospital as a precaution, said Dwyer. Police did not identify the officer.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it may have been related to the crash, Dwyer said.
