The Houston Police Department has released surveillance and body-worn video of a Dec. 2 incident in which a sergeant was ambushed in his unmarked vehicle and the suspect was killed.

The sergeant was wounded in both arms and both legs. He collapsed after the suspect fled, the video shows. The sergeant was soon under the care of his fellow officers who applied tourniquets to his bleeding limbs.

Sgt. Mauricio Valle, wounded in both legs and both arms, fires on a fleeing suspect who just ambushed him in his vehicle. The suspect was killed. Sgt. Valle is recovering.

Sgt. Mauricio Valle was searching for a burglary suspect shortly after 1 a.m. when he was shot. Surveillance video from the scene shows a man run up to Sgt. Valle’s car and open fire. After firing multiple shots into the vehicle and hitting the sergeant, the man walks around to the driver’s side of the vehicle as the sergeant gets out with his weapon draw. The suspect flees under fire from the sergeant.

Fox News reported at the time of the shooting that Sgt. Valle vest stopped a bullet.
The sergeant is expected to recover fully from his wounds, ABC13 reports.
The suspect was located down behind an industrial building near the shooting location. He was shot in the chest and stomach, according to officers speaking on body cameras.
Officers administered chest compressions in an attempt to save him.
The suspect, identified by authorities as Edwin Joey Villegas, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
