House Democrats Pass Police Reform Bill

The House voted along party lines Wednesday to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, a Democrat-backed bill that seeks to enact sweeping police reform, including a federal ban on chokeholds and no-knock warrants. In addition, the bill limits qualified immunity and establishes a police misconduct database.

The bill passed by a 220-212 vote. Texas Rep. Lance Gooden was the lone Republican to vote in favor of the bill, while two Democrats voted against it. Gooden said later he pressed the wrong button.

The bill now proceeds for further consideration in the Senate, where it is expected to face stiff opposition from GOP lawmakers. Last week, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi acknowledged it would be difficult to pass the bill in the upper chamber, Fox News reports.
