Chronister said the suspect, later identified as Ralph Bouzy, 28, intentionally ambushed deputies with his car, intending to kill them, Fox 13 reports.
Two deputies responded to a call in Brandon at around 7:44 a.m. after a woman said her son was in a mental health crisis at their home.
The first two arriving deputies found the son sitting in a running car and tried to de-escalate the situation, but Bouzy refused to roll down the window and left the scene in the car.
Chronister said Bouzy then returned to the scene, where two other deputies had arrived, at a high rate of speed. He accelerated into them and smashed them into their SUV.
The two seriously injured deputies were identified by Chronister as Cpl. Carlos Brito and Deputy Manny Santos.
Cpl. Brito’s injuries are so grievous that his leg may have to be amputated. A bone fragment from the corporal’s shattered femur had to be retrieved from the scene and rushed into surgery.
Deputy Santos suffered bilateral leg fracture, according to the sheriff. The term bilateral usually indicates that both legs were broken.
Both deputies were medevaced to a hospital. Chronister praised Hillsborough County Fire and Rescue for their rapid response.
