A senior Fargo police officer who was wounded during a July 14 ambush that killed a fellow officer has a long road to recovery, but says he can’t wait to be back on duty.
Officer Andrew Dotas, a field training officers who was wounded in the attack that killed rookie Officer Jake Wallin, was released from the hospital in August and is now recovering at home. Also wounded in the attack were Dotas’ trainee Officer Tyler Hawes.
The gunman was killed by Dotas’ fellow FTO Officer Zachary Robinson.
In a video released by the Fargo Police Department, Dotas and his wife Hannah spoke about the attack and its aftermath.
Dotas praised Officer Hawes’ courage during the attack, saying he crawled over to him to help him and made the ambulance take Dotas first because he had more severe wounds.
Dotas, 28, says his work as a Fargo officer is not finished.
He is eager to return to work as school resource officer and a crisis negotiator, positions he had been assigned to right before the shooting.
His recovery could take as much as a year.
