A Battle Creek, Michigan, police officer was shot Thursday when a suspect got her gun during a struggle. Police Chief Shannon Bagley, during a Friday-afternoon briefing, said she is doing well and hopefully will be released from the hospital later in the day.
The suspect, 29-year-old Dario Arguello, of San Antonio, Texas, was killed by another officer.
The City of Battle Creek released body-worn video from the confrontation and shooting.
Police responded to Cafe Rica about 3 p.m., shortly after they received a report that Arguello had assaulting someone elsewhere. Earlier in the day police had been called to the same location when the establishment’s management had concern for Arguello’s behavior and wanted him to leave, reported FOX2.
In this second contact with officers, a female officer saw Arguello at a table and attempted to detain him. The video shows how as she attempted to cuff him, he spun around quickly and resisted.
Bagley explained during Friday’s press briefing that Arguello then started to walk slowly toward the officer, and she deployed her Taser. The BWC footage shows it had no effect and Arguello immediately rushed toward the officer, then wrestled her to the ground.
The officer can be heard on video yelling “He’s got my gun.”
During the struggle, Arguello disarmed the officer and fired one shot that struck the officer in a leg. At that point, another officer returned fire, killing the suspect.
The Michigan State Police are investigating, and the police department will also review the incident to make sure officers acted within the department’s use of force policy.
