Boston's Famous "Bullpen Cop" to Retire from the Department
The officer with the Boston (MA) Police Department who was made instantly famous for his unbridled emotional response to a David Ortiz game-tying grand slam in the eighth inning of Game 2 of the American League Championship Series is scheduled to retire this month.

Officer Steve Horgan—working a detail in the bullpen at Fenway Park for the game—saw the ball cross the fence and jubilantly threw his hands in the air in celebration. Horgan became an instant internet sensation—his image became a viral "meme."
He later told reporters that he didn't even realize the Detroit Tigers outfielder had tumbled over the fence in pursuit of the ball.
For game two of the American League Division Series between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox in October 2018, Boston City Manager Marty Walsh watched as Horgan threw out the first pitch. The Yankees won that game 6-2, but the Red Sox went on to win the World Series.
According to NBC Sports, Horgan was scheduled to retire this month, meaning the 2018 Championship run by the Red Sox was his last season.
