A small Arkansas school district is arming and training 20 volunteer teachers and staff with handguns for fall classes under a little known state law allowing license, armed security guards on campus.

A small Arkansas school district is arming and training 20 volunteer teachers and staff with handguns for fall classes under a little known state law allowing license, armed security guards on campus.

The armed volunteers arrive at the public schools in Clarksville, a 9,200-resident community northwest of Little Rock, as a response to the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, the superintendent tells USA Today .

The volunteers have undergone 53 hours of training and will be armed with 9mm handguns. Participants will be given a $1,100 stipend to purchase a gun and holster. The district is spending about $50,000 for ammunition and training at a private facility.
