At least 25 officers were injured in Memphis in a riot sparked when United States Marshals shot and killed a man with multiple warrants Wednesday.
The details of the charges in those warrants was not immediately clear, but Shelby County (Memphis) District Attorney General Amy Weirich said the warrants were for "violent felony offenses, from an incident that occurred June 3, 2019, in Hernando, Miss."
A source close to the investigation confirmed the charges are related to an incident in which a Hernando man was shot and his car stolen by a man. The suspect had met the victim on Facebook and was test-driving the vehicle after saying he wanted to buy it, WREG reports.
According to NBC News, most of the injuries officers suffered during the melee Wednesday night were relatively minor, but Memphis Police Director Mike Rallings said some officers were seriously injured.
The incident that ignited the rioting was the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Brandon Webber at around 1900 hours local time.
Officers from the U.S. Marshals Service as part of the Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force tried to take Webber into custody when he reportedly rammed his vehicle into the officers' vehicles multiple times before exiting with a weapon.
Officers opened fire, fatally striking the subject.
After word of the shooting was made public, a crowd of people gathered in protest, and some became violent and began to throw rocks and bricks.
Two officers were shot in Gainesville, Florida, by a man who police say was leaving an area where he had killed a man inside a business. The suspect exited his vehicle in what the chief termed an “ambush-style” attack.
