According to
NBC News
, most of the injuries officers suffered during the melee Wednesday night were relatively minor, but Memphis Police Director Mike Rallings said some officers were seriously injured.
The incident that ignited the rioting was the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Brandon Webber at around 1900 hours local time.
Officers from the U.S. Marshals Service as part of the Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force tried to take Webber into custody when he reportedly rammed his vehicle into the officers' vehicles multiple times before exiting with a weapon.
Officers opened fire, fatally striking the subject.
After word of the shooting was made public, a crowd of people gathered in protest, and some became violent and began to throw rocks and bricks.
