Two western North Carolina sheriff’s deputies died in the flooding caused by Hurricane Helene over the weekend.
The NC Sheriffs' Association said the fallen deputies are from the Macon County Sheriff’s Office and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputy Jim Lau was in a truck before it went underwater on Friday around 11:30 a.m. His body was found Saturday in the Swannanoa River.

Madison County SO has not commented or identified the fallen deputy, WCNC reports.
Macon County officials say Deputy Jim Lau was killed in the aftermath of the storm. A courthouse security officer and deputy with the department, Lau was in a truck before it went underwater on Friday around 11:30 a.m. His body was found Saturday in the river.
Lau, 75, was retired from the Volusia County (Florida) Sheriff’s Office.
Heavy rains from Helene have resulted in devastating flooding and dozens of storm-related deaths. Numerous roads have been flooded or washed out and power is out in the region.
