The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department released video from a pursuit earlier this year in which a murder suspect fired at officers multiple times. He was fatally shot by an officer when he pointed a gun at the officer after the pursuit ended.

The critical incident briefing video released by IMPD details how officers were dispatched to the report of a woman having been shot on July 28 at 7:20 a.m. Officers located the woman, who was transported by ambulance to an area hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Murder Suspect Identified

Detectives learned the shooting stemmed from a domestic disturbance, and officers on scene reported a description of the man and the vehicle he had used to flee the scene.

Just before 8 a.m., officers located the suspect, 76-year-old Walter McNary, driving the vehicle that had been described. When officers activated emergency lights, McNary refused to stop.

Shots Fired at Pursuing Officers

The video shows the pursuit of the black compact SUV as McNary makes a left turn at an intersection, then stops, opens the driver’s door, and fires shots at the pursuing officer. The officer returned fire, discharging his service weapon from inside his patrol vehicle.

At the next intersection, video shows McNary drifing down an alley and coming to a stop at an intersection, where he fired at least two shots at a passing officer.

And again at another intersection, McNary slowed and fired at officers. At this point, the officer whose vehicle had been the first to be hit by gunfire, opened his door and fired his patrol rifle.

Pursuit Ends, Suspect Points Gun at Officer

The pursuit ended when McNary drove onto a property and stopped around the side of a residence.

The officer, the same one who was the first to be fired upon during the pursuit, exited his vehicle and took cover near the front passenger door of his patrol unit.

When McNary came into view around the side of the home and pointed a firearm at the officer, the officer fired a single shot from his patrol rifle, striking the suspect. The suspect went down.

SWAT used an armored vehicle to approach McNary, who did not respond to commands. However, he was still within reach of his firearm. After deploying a flashbang, SWAT officers moved in and took him into custody, and officers rendered medical aid. McNary was taken to an area hospital by EMS, where he was pronounced dead.

IMPD reported a rifle was found near McNary, and a handgun was inside the car.

No officers were injured despite two IMPD vehicles being hit by gunfire.
