“Something Needs to Change” TX Chief Says After Officer Shot by Repeat Offender

San Antonio Chief William McManus said the suspect who was arrested is a repeat violent offender who was wanted on an aggravated assault warrant and a violation of a protective order warrant

After a San Antonio officer was shot and wounded Tuesday afternoon, the city’s police chief issued a statement on the need to get repeat offenders off the streets. The officer is reportedly in stable condition and a suspect is in custody.

This is the second time in less than two weeks that Chief William McManus has responded angrily about violent felons shooting his officers when they should be in prison.

"There are people on the street who are violent repeat offenders who should be in jail. Period," he said.

Chief McManus said the suspect who was arrested is a repeat violent offender who was wanted on an aggravated assault warrant and a violation of a protective order warrant, KENS5 reports.

McManus later told reporters: "Something needs to change. We can't continue doing this. We can't continue endangering the public by leaving these people on the street."

Six San Antonio officers have been shot or injured since Aug. 24.
