Pursuit Safety
The high-speed pursuits you saw on the old TV shows and movies had a big part in all of our decisions to enter the world of law enforcement. However, times have changed.

The Path
I was sitting there trying to age gracefully when I noticed a girl in a wheelchair moving up to the edge of the pool as her race was getting ready to start. Since she was paralyzed from the waist down she could not start with a great leap into the water. So she lowered herself into the pool and pushed off with her arms.

A New Look, A New Year
The more observant of you may notice that this issue of POLICE looks a little different. In the magazine industry, this is called a redesign, and weβre really jazzed about our new look. Now, I know that some of you out there may be thinking, βWhyβd they change it? I liked it just the way it was.β

2007 Chevy Tahoe PPV
It was my fault. I entered the hairpin curve way too fast, and the SUV I was driving went into a spin. But I had two things going for me that prevented the spin from being dangerous: I was in the 2007 Chevy Tahoe Police Package Vehicle and I was on a closed course at GMβs Scottsdale, Ariz., proving grounds.

30th Anniversary: Driving Memories
When I started my law enforcement career about the same time that Police was launched in 1976, cop cars were changing. It was the era of the oil embargo and the gas shortages, so the engines in patrol vehicles started to get a lot smaller.

30 Years and Still Going Strong
Give or take a few weeks, Police Magazine was born 30 years ago this month as Police Product News. The magazine was the brainchild of Rodney A. Dornsife, its first editor and a San Diego cop. And like many small magazine startups it was a family project. Rodβs brother Chad was the advertising director, and according to Chad their father worked distribution.

In-Car Computers
Time was that the only computer in a patrol car was the Casio calculator inside the duty bag of the driver. Now just a decade later, computers are so common in patrol cars that some have more than one.

Patrol Cars: Class of 2006
Yes, I've seen a lot of police cars over the years, but I don't think I've ever seen a better-looking crop of patrol cars than the class of 2006. Each one of these cars has great lines. They look both modern and a bit retro. And they have plenty of engine to get the job done.

Standing Their Ground
Most of usβThank Godβwill never experience anything as emotionally, physically, and spiritually shattering as Hurricane Katrina. Short of an atomic bomb detonation or a biological attack, Katrina is as bad as it gets.

TREXPO West 2005
On the patio outside the Long Beach Convention Center there was a clear reminder of what the conference/trade show inside was all about. There, the Long Beach Police Department parked three tactical vehicles, and officers attending the recent Tactical Response Expo (TREXPO) West show had to pass by each to get into the doors.
