Ballistic Vest Saves KY Officer Shot in Chest After Basketball Game

A Kentucky officer was saved by his ballistic vest Sunday when he was shot in the chest when officers approached a man, wanted on multiple warrants, after recognizing him at a park during an annual basketball tournament.

A Kentucky officer was saved by his ballistic vest Sunday when he was shot in the chest when officers approached a man, wanted on multiple warrants, after recognizing him at a park during an annual basketball tournament.

Louisville Metropolitan Police Department officers were working at the Dirt Bowl basketball tournament and recognized a man wanted on 12 outstanding warrants, reports WLKY. As officers approached, the man produced a gun and fired a shot that struck one of the officers in the chest.

Officers returned fire and hit the suspect, according to police. He was taken to University of Louisville Hospital in unknown condition. A firearm was recovered at the scene and police are consulting with Kentucky State Police regarding the ongoing investigation.

The officer shot in the chest did not sustain major injuries, police say.
