A Pinellas Park, FL, police officer is recovering after being shot in the arm Tuesday night after an exchange with a suspect at a gas station. Officer Jacob Derr is in stable condition at an area hospital and the suspect is in custody.

Police tell BayNews9 this started at the Circle K as a 911 call from a woman locked inside a bathroom. She said her boyfriend had roughed her up. When Derr arrived, investigators say the boyfriend, 24-year-old Calvin Brockington, got out of his car and opened fire.

Police report Brockington also shot at Officer KC Gavin, who arrived for backup. She returned fire, but Brockton was not hit and soon fled.

Police said Brockington carjacked a vehicle and drove at officer Gavin before fleeing the scene, reports WFLA. When deputies tried to stop him, a pursuit began. He entered the southbound lanes of Interstate 275 and drove over 10 miles to 22nd Avenue South, where he was stopped and taken into custody.

Charges are pending.
