Armed Shoplifting Suspect Shoots and Kills K-9

“K9 Dash, who has been on patrol for five years was shot and killed doing what he was trained to do: track and apprehend a suspect and to protect his two-legged canine partner."

A Shepherdsville (KY) Police Department K-9 was shot and killed by a shoplifting suspect Wednesday night in Lebanon Junction.

Kentucky State Police told WHAS11 when officers arrived on the scene they found a man outside the Dollar General with a firearm. The man reportedly began firing at police and took off running.

Dash, the K-9, found the suspect hiding nearby and attempted to restrain him, but the man discharged his firearm striking the dog, police say.

KSP said that officers with the Shepherdsville Police Department and Bullitt County Sheriff's Department returned fire, striking the man multiple times. He was transported by EMS to the University of Louisville Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“K9 Dash, who has been on patrol for five years was shot and killed doing what he was trained to do: track and apprehend a suspect and to protect his two-legged canine partner. That is exactly what Dash did, apprehended the suspect and gave his life to protect his partner,” Shepherdsville Police Chief Rick McCubbin said in a Facebook post.
