Last weekend's murder of Chicago Police Officer Ella French, is part of the 47 felonious police officer killings so far in 2021, according to the FBI’s Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted Program (LEOKA).

That's more than in all of 2020, when there were 46, according to the data. And there have been nearly as many officers killed this year as the entirety of 2019 (48) and 2017 (48).

April was the deadliest month for law enforcement, with eight killings reported, according to ABC News.

The FBI reports that accidental killings of police have also increased 20% though the end of July.
