Police say two people died and a deputy was hurt in a shooting Saturday night after a traffic stop in Wadena County, MN, turned into an exchange of gunfire. A second officer was shot and saved by body armor.

According to the Wadena County Sheriff's Office, around 8:48 p.m., a deputy attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic offense in North Germany Township. The vehicle eventually stopped.

The sheriff's office told KTSP a struggle started to happen between the deputy and the driver. A second driver then arrived on the scene and right after, a Sebeka Police Department officer arrived and the struggled continued.

A short time later, at least one of the two people involved began shooting at the officers. One of the officers returned fire. The suspects and the deputy and officer were hit.

The wounded deputy has since been released from the hospital and is recovering at home, according to an update from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

The Sebeka officer was struck in the vest and did not require medical treatment.
