An officer with the Chicago Police Department was hospitalized on Thursday afternoon after he was struck by a patrol vehicle as he was engaged in a foot pursuit of a man suspected to be armed.

According to ABC News, police said officers were monitoring a gang funeral in the area when someone threw a gun out of the window of a vehicle. The vehicle took off and officers pursued.

The offender eventually stopped, exited the car, and fled on foot.

At least one officer got out of his vehicle and continued the pursuit. Officials said it was at this point that a patrol vehicle struck him. Chicago PD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the officer suffered two broken ribs and a fractured orbital bone, but he is expected to be OK.

The officer was transported to a nearby hospital where he was listed in stable condition.
