A Dallas County, TX, jury sentenced former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger to 10 years Wednesday for the murder of her neighbor Botham Jean.
Guyger was convicted Tuesday of murder in the killing, which occurred when she mistook the neighbor's apartment for her own, entered, and shot the man reportedly believing he was a burglar. She faced up to 99 years for the crime. The minimum sentence would have been five years.
The state asked the jury to sentence Guyger to a minimum of 28 years – the age Botham Jean would have been on Sunday, WFAA reports.
