An officer with the Ogden (NY) Police Department followed the sound of a whimpering dog to a hole in the ice of a canal and pulled the shivering pup to safety.

The department posted the dramatic body-camera footage to its Facebook page, saying that Sergeant Travis Gray made his way out onto the ice "at great risk to himself" in order to effect the rescue.

The department added, "The dog was exhausted and hypothermic but did recover."

The department located the dog's owner and reunited them with their pet.

The Facebook post concluded, "Thanks also to Spencerport FD for the response and Gates EMS for the assistance in warming up our new friend."
