An officer with the Kansas City (MO) Police Department is on life support after police found him with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound on Friday night.

According to WDAF-TV, the family of the officer reported him missing and at risk of doing harm to himself earlier in the day and an extensive search was begun.

Authorities found the wounded officer in his vehicle in the parking lot of a local church.

He was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where he is being kept on life support while organ donor recipients are identified and located.
