An officer with the Fayetteville (NC) Police Department who was reportedly under investigation for crimes involving a child was found dead over the weekend.

The cause of death and the identity of the officer have not been released, nor have any details of the investigation into the criminal complaint against the officer.

The department said in a statement to CBS News, "One of the major priorities of the Fayetteville Police Department has been, and continues to be, to focus on not revictimizing complainants and victims by publicizing details surrounding their strength and courage to report such activities to us. Due to the sensitive nature of the investigation, and to avoid revictimizing the juvenile victim, we are not releasing additional details at this time. We continue to provide victim services to the victim and the victim’s family during this time."

The death is being investigated by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.
