A Fort Worth, Texas, police officer was injured in an exchange of gunfire that left another man dead Thursday night, police said, reports the Dallas Morning News.
KXAS-TV (NBC5) reported that a woman called officers to her home in the 4800 block of Hildring Drive, near Interstate 20 in southern Fort Worth, to conduct a welfare check on her adult son, 40-year-old Wendell King, who was in his room.
When officers arrived, the man fired a handgun, striking 19-year veteran Sgt. Shane Drake of the department once. According to media reports, other officers then returned fire, killing the man.
Sgt. Drake is out of surgery and is suspected to recover from the wound to his lower abdomen.
