Some police officers in Florida went undercover on Wednesday right out in the open. It gave speeders quite a surprise, WESH 2 News reported.

According to the Florida Department of Transportation, in 2005 there were 4,000 accidents in highway construction zones that claimed the lives of 137 people.

The numbers prompted the effort. Police officers dressed as construction workers along U.S. Highway 441 in Leesburg. They alerted other police officers who then pulled over speeders zipping through the work zones.

The enforcement effort is part of a week-long effort throughout the state to make people aware that work zones are especially dangerous. Troopers and police across Central Florida are doing similar operations to keep construction zones safer.
