A Texas motor officer has died after being hit by a car Monday morning.

An official investigation says that Harris County Dep. Constable Jason Norling, 38, stopped a driver for a traffic violation on the Westpark Tollway at about 10:20 a.m.

Police say Norling had parked his motorcycle directly behind the stopped vehicle. He was standing at the stopped vehicle’s window giving back the violator’s license, when an SUV struck his motorcycle and then hit him.

Norling was rushed to the hospital, but his injuries were too severe, and he died two hours after the accident.

The driver, who stopped at the scene, faces charges of failure to move over a lane for a stopped police officer under a new Texas law that requires motorist to do so for stopped emergency vehicles. The charges could be upgraded to negligent homicide.
