Black Officers Claim Hiring Discrimination In Syracuse

In a federal lawsuit, three black Syracuse police officers claim racial discrimination in promotion and hiring practices by the department.

Three black Syracuse police officers have filed a federal lawsuit against the city, saying they were passed over for promotion and discriminated against by the police force and their own union because of their race.

The suit also alleges that the city is not complying with a 1980 federal consent decree that sets out goals to have black officers make up 10 percent of each rank and 25 percent of each recruit class, reports the Post-Standard.
