An arbitration panel will determine the future of police residency in Pittsburgh, following a Monday hearing where two councilman argued that officers must live within city limits.
The police union representing Pittsburgh Police Bureau officers has argued to remove the requirement since October, when a state law opened the door for the challenge. Negotiations between the city and the Fraternal Order of Police haven't resolved the dispute, reports the Post-Gazette.
In June, several police officers testified about the hardship of the residency requirement, including the poor quality of schools and safety issues that come with living in proximity to criminals.
