TREXPO East 2005: Words of Wisdom and Warning
This year's TREXPO East, held Aug. 29 through Sept. 1 in Chantilly, Va., was an unusual kind of law enforcement trade show. It actually had star power. It had Sgt. Major Billy Waugh of the U.S. Army Special Forces.

The Money Crunch: Getting the Goods
Gone are the days of simple two-way radios and revolvers. Now each officer must carry a multitude of less-lethal weapons in addition to a gun and probably a PDA. While grants are useful, they arenβt the only means by which to acquire funding for equipment.

Walking the Line
As a supervisor, get to know your people, support them and provide the guidance to ensure they are making the right decisions. When you are successful, anonymity is often your reward, while failure brings the press scandal that brings down careers and departments.

Battlefield Medicine
Since police officers are routinely the first to arrive on the scene of a car wreck or a gun battle, they need something more effective than a tourniquet or a pressure bandage. And several companies are now competing for that business with hemostats that they claim will stop bleeding in seconds.

TWO if by Sea: Tactical Waterborne Units
The lesson of the Baltimore exercise is quite clear: police agencies can't just arbitrarily decide that their jurisdictions end at the water's edge and assume that anything on the water will be handled by the Coast Guard, the Navy, or somebody else.

The Fifth Element
Welcome to the new battleground. Called "fifth-dimensional battlespace," it takes the old three-dimensional battlefield (the spatial dimensions of length, width, height or depth of an area), and the temporal dimension of time, and adds the fifth dimension of cyberspace.
