Yet, the Department of Defense's 1033 program, as it is known, offers agencies access to military-grade equipment.

The federal government's 1033 program allows law enforcement agencies to acquire special vehicles such as an amphibious LAV, Humvee, MRAP, patrol boat, helicopter or even a landing craft for specialized missions. Arizona Man Shot by Officer Struggled with PTSD
Glendale Police Sgt. April Arredondo, a 14-year veteran of the department, fatally shot Jeremiah Wilson Pulaski, 24, on Saturday. Pulaski had opened fire, while Sgt. Arredondo was parked with a 52-year-old civilian volunteer riding along.

Video: Wisconsin Officer Killed by Army Vet
Fond du Lac Officer Craig Birkholz, 28, was shot in the upper torso above his ballistic vest as he approached the home at 24 S. Lincoln Ave. K-9 Officer Ryan Williams and his dog Grendel were also shot at about 6:30 a.m. Sunday.

California Agency Detonates Grenade In Station's Lawn
The grenade was removed from the vehicle and rendered safe by the deputies. Due to the condition of the device, it was disposed of at the scene and not transported for destruction. The bomb squad buried the device in the station's lawn, and then detonated it.
